ποΈ British Gymnastics β the governing body
British Gymnastics is the UK's national governing body for the sport. It sets coaching standards, runs the club and coach registration schemes, and organises the competition structure from regional events up to the British Championships. Clubs and coaches in our area sit within the South West region.
π Coaching qualifications
Coach education runs through staged, assessed levels:
- Level 1 β Assistant Coach: supports sessions under supervision.
- Level 2 β Coach: plans and delivers sessions independently.
- Level 3 β Senior Coach: advanced skills, leads programmes.
- Level 4/5 β High-performance: competitive and elite pathways.
Alongside their coaching award, coaches working with children hold safeguarding training, first aid and an enhanced DBS check β always ask; a good coach is glad you did.
π How children progress
Most children start with proficiency badge schemes β numbered awards where each badge is earned by mastering a set of skills, from shapes, rolls and balances up to handsprings and beyond. From there the pathway typically runs:
Recreational classes β Club squads β County & regional events (South West) β National grades & championships
Disciplines include artistic (floor and apparatus), rhythmic, trampoline, acrobatic and TeamGym β most young gymnasts begin with general floor and vault work before specialising.
β Questions parents ask
What should my child wear?
Leotard, or a t-shirt and shorts/leggings with nothing loose or dangling. Bare feet, hair tied back.
What age can they start?
Pre-school gymnastics starts from walking age; structured classes usually from 4β5.
Do parents stay?
For younger children, yes β the viewing area at Writhlington means you can watch without being on the floor.
