Gymnastics in the UK

  • Pre-school gymnastics (ages 1–4): Β£36.12 a month, all year round (except two weeks at Christmas and bank holidays).
  • Recreational junior lessons (age 4 / in reception, up to 16): term-time only, Β£30.73 a month spread over 11 payments β€” nothing taken in August.

  • Stay and Play (parent-assisted, inflatables, soft play and trampolines): Mondays and Wednesdays 9.15–10.15am, Β£5 pay-as-you-go.

Safeguarding: Dragonfly Leisure has a published safeguarding and welfare commitment for every child on its programmes. πŸ›οΈ British Gymnastics β€” the governing body

British Gymnastics is the UK's national governing body for the sport. It sets coaching standards, runs the club and coach registration schemes, and organises the competition structure from regional events up to the British Championships. Clubs and coaches in our area sit within the South West region.

πŸŽ“ Coaching qualifications

Coach education runs through staged, assessed levels:

  • Level 1 β€” Assistant Coach: supports sessions under supervision.
  • Level 2 β€” Coach: plans and delivers sessions independently.
  • Level 3 β€” Senior Coach: advanced skills, leads programmes.
  • Level 4/5 β€” High-performance: competitive and elite pathways.

Alongside their coaching award, coaches working with children hold safeguarding training, first aid and an enhanced DBS check β€” always ask; a good coach is glad you did.

πŸ… How children progress

Most children start with proficiency badge schemes β€” numbered awards where each badge is earned by mastering a set of skills, from shapes, rolls and balances up to handsprings and beyond. From there the pathway typically runs:

Recreational classes β†’ Club squads β†’ County & regional events (South West) β†’ National grades & championships

Disciplines include artistic (floor and apparatus), rhythmic, trampoline, acrobatic and TeamGym β€” most young gymnasts begin with general floor and vault work before specialising.

❓ Questions parents ask

What should my child wear?
Leotard, or a t-shirt and shorts/leggings with nothing loose or dangling. Bare feet, hair tied back.

What age can they start?
Pre-school gymnastics starts from walking age; structured classes usually from 4–5.

Do parents stay?
For younger children, yes β€” the viewing area at Writhlington means you can watch without being on the floor.

πŸ’¬ Write a message

Write once, then choose how it goes: email queues it in Sent messages (and sends itself on the server once SMTP is set up), WhatsApp opens the app with the message ready β€” or sends automatically if the WhatsApp Business API is connected. Families also get an in-app notification either way.

πŸ“Έ Post a photo

Post to a child's family β€” they get a notification and an email. If the family has consented, the photo also goes up on the public photo board; if not, only they (and you) can see it. Club photos with no child in them always go on the board.

Days I coach

Tick a day and set its hours. New weeks open with these; you can still adjust any single slot on the diary.

πŸ˜€ Site icon

Change the little logo shown in the top corner and on the browser tab. Square pictures work best. Remove any custom picture to go back to the standard handstand-in-a-heart icon.

πŸ–ΌοΈ Home page picture

Upload a photo for the front page β€” it appears in the welcome banner the moment it's saved. Pictures are resized automatically. Remember: only use photos of children whose parents have given permission.

πŸ“… Look ahead & block out

Every week you've opened, at a glance β€” the same view families see on the home page. Tap any slot to close it or mark it Holiday / Competition / Away (the pop-up has a "whole day" button), and it's saved and on the site straight away. Green = free, orange = booked, grey = blocked out.

⏰ Booking reminder emails β€” server edition

On the server, every family is emailed automatically before each booking: once well ahead and once shortly before. Set how many hours before each reminder goes.

βœ‰οΈ Email sending (SMTP) β€” server edition

Fill these in when the site runs on the server (see the server guide in this pack) and every queued message in "Sent messages" sends itself by email β€” booking confirmations, cancellations and new-photo alerts. Opened straight from the file, messages stay in the tray with one-tap send buttons.

πŸ’¬ WhatsApp (optional) β€” server edition

The WhatsApp buttons in Sent messages and the register always work β€” they open WhatsApp with the message pre-written. For fully automatic sending, connect a WhatsApp Business Cloud API account (a Meta service) and enter its details here; the server then sends each message itself.
